Finding Direction

The two most important navigation tools you can bring with you are the compass and the watch/clock. Both will help you find direction, and the clock goes even further by indicating time elapsed, by which you can estimate the distance you have travelled.

Making a compass

You can improvise a compass with a needle by magnetizing it (by stroking it repeatedly in one direction with either a silk scarf or a magnet) then by floating it on a blade of glass in a bowl of water. The needle will orient itself in a north-south direction.

Using the sun

Northern Hemisphere: Point the hour hand at the sun. Imagine a line halfway between hour hand and the 12 o'clock. South will be at the head of that line.

Southern Hemisphere: In the southern hemisphere, point the 12 o'clock mark of the watch at the sun. North lies half way between 12 o'clock and the hour hand.
