Fire
Fire is essential to survival; it improves morale, it is used for
cooking, purifying water, keeping warm, and keeping wild animals and
insects at bay.
There are 5 main ingredients to a good fire; they must be added to
the fire in the correct order so that the fire builds up from a small
spark to a healthy roaring campfire.
- Tinder: The most important part of a fire, as it is
essential to starting the fire (unless you have an artificial
firestarter.) Tinder can be dead leaves, bark, dry grass, moss, or
shelf fungus. Make sure that whatever you use is very dry and in
small pieces.
- Kindling: Once the tinder has caught, you can add dry
kindling in the form of small sticks and leaves. Make sure the
kindling is bone dry.
- Small Fuel: When the kindling is burning well, you can
add sticks about the thickness of a finger.
- Main Fuel: Large sticks act as the main fuel; they
should be larger than your finger, but easy to break into
manageable pieces.
- Large Fuel: Thick logs are for keeping an established
fire going all night. Make sure they are completely burned when
you put out the fire.
